At the EU Open Source Policy Summit 2026, organised by OpenForum Europe, we presented the conference report of the UN Open Source Week: a synthesis of the key insights, lessons learned and good practices shared by policymakers, practitioners and open source leaders on how open source is shaping public-sector innovation, digital public infrastructure and inclusive digital transformation.
The session also featured a landmark announcement: Barcelona became the first city in the world to formally endorse the UN Open Source Principles. It is a milestone that shows the growing role of cities as drivers of open source adoption, and an example of how local governments can align their digital policies with openness, transparency and the public interest.
Speakers: Arnau Monterde (Director of Participation and Innovation for Democracy, Barcelona City Council), Omar Mohsine (Open Source Coordinator, UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies) and Dr. Sachiko Muto (Chair, OpenForum Europe).
